Ocotea rubra Mez (Louro vermelho, wane)

Nomenclature etc. LAURACEAE. Syn.: Nectandra rubra (Mez) C.K. Allen. Trade and local names: louro vermelho, puxurí-rana (BR), determa (GY), wane (NL, SR), taparin, bewana, tetroema, wonae (SR), grignon, g. franc (FR), red louro (GB). Not protected under CITES regulations.

Tree. Geographic distribution: tropical South America.

General. Heartwood basically brown to red. Sapwood colour distinct from heartwood colour. Density 0.5–0.6 g/cm³.

Vessels. Wood diffuse-porous. Vessels arranged in diagonal and/or radial pattern (diagonal pattern with periodic change of direction), in multiples, commonly short (2–3 vessels) radial rows. Average tangential vessel diameter 100–160–230 µm. Average number of vessels/mm² 4–9. Perforation plates simple. Intervessel pits alternate, average diameter (vertical) 10–14–18 µm. Vessel-ray pits with reduced borders or apparently simple, different from intervessel pits, rounded or angular, of two distinct sizes or types in the same ray cell, unilaterally compound and coarse (extremely large window-like pits). Tyloses in vessels present, thinwalled.

Tracheids and fibres. Fibres very thin-walled and of medium wall thickness. Average fibre length 1000–1800–2500 µm. Fibre pits mainly restricted to radial walls, simple to minutely bordered. Fibres septate and non-septate. Septate fibres evenly distributed.

Axial parenchyma. Axial parenchyma paratracheal. Paratracheal axial parenchyma vasicentric. Axial parenchyma as strands. Average number of cells per axial parenchyma strand 4–8.

Rays. Rays 3–8 per tangential mm, multiseriate (also if only few), 2–3 cells wide. Rays composed of two or more cell types (heterocellular). Heterocellular rays with square and upright cells restricted to marginal rows, mostly 1 marginal row of upright or square cells.

Secretory structures. Oil and mucilage cells present, associated with axial parenchyma and ray parenchyma (infrequent in rays).

Mineral inclusions. Crystals not observed. Silica not observed.
