Tree. Geographic distribution: tropical Africa, or Mexico and Central America to tropical South America.
General. Heartwood basically white or grey (to light brown), without streaks. Sapwood colour similar to heartwood colour. Density 0.3–0.55 g/cm³.
Vessels. Wood diffuse-porous. Vessels in multiples, commonly short (2–3 vessels) radial rows. Vessel outline rounded. Average tangential vessel diameter 80–260 µm. Average number of vessels/mm² 3–6(–15). Average vessel element length 300–880 µm. Perforation plates simple. Intervessel pits alternate, average diameter (vertical) 10–15 µm. Vessel-ray pits with reduced borders or apparently simple, rounded or angular or horizontal to vertical. Tyloses in vessels absent.
Tracheids and fibres. Fibres very thin-walled, or of medium wall thickness. Average fibre length 850–1430 µm. Fibre pits mainly restricted to radial walls, simple to minutely bordered. Fibres exclusively septate. Septate fibres evenly distributed.
Axial parenchyma. Axial parenchyma paratracheal. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty, or vasicentric. Axial parenchyma as strands. Average number of cells per axial parenchyma strand 4.
Rays. Rays 2–4 per tangential mm, multiseriate (also if only few), 3–5(–7) cells wide. Rays composed of two or more cell types (heterocellular). Heterocellular rays with square and upright cells restricted to marginal rows, mostly 1 marginal row of upright or square cells.
Secretory structures. Intercellular canals present, radial type.
Mineral inclusions. Crystals present, prismatic, located in ray cells and axial parenchyma cells. Crystal-containing ray cells upright and/or square and procumbent. Crystal-containing axial parenchyma cells not chambered. Number of crystals per cell or chamber one. Silica not observed.
