Solanum species of eastern and northern Australia
Habit. Sprawling or erect, herbaceous resprouter, 0.2–0.5 m high.
Branchlets. Branchlets yellow or rusty or brown. Branchlet prickles 10–50 per decimetre, straight, acicular, 5–12 mm long, glabrous or with dense stellate hairs on lower part. Branchlet hairs stellate. Branchlet stellae very dense. Branchlet stellae central ray 0.4–0.8 times as long as laterals, not gland-tipped. Branchlet Type 2 hairs absent.
Leaves. Leaves elliptical or ovate, shallowly lobed throughout or deeply lobed throughout. Leaf lobes 3–6 on each side, obtuse, lobing index 1.5–2.2. Leaves 2–7 cm long, 1.5–2 cm wide. Leaf apex obtuse or acute, base obtuse or cordate. Petioles 0.5–1.5 cm long, prickles present.
Upper leaf surface. Upper leaf surface green. Upper leaf surface prickles present on midvein only or present on midvein and lateral veins, straight, acicular. Upper leaf surface stellate hairs distributed throughout, protostellae absent, hair density sparse to moderate density. Upper leaf surface simple hairs absent. Upper leaf surface Type 2 hairs absent.
Lower leaf surface. Lower leaf surface yellowish or rusty. Lower leaf surface prickles present on midvein only or present on midvein and lateral veins, straight, acicular. Lower leaf surface stellate hair density dense or very dense. Lower leaf surface stellae central ray not gland-tipped. Lower leaf surface simple hairs absent. Lower leaf surface Type 2 hairs absent.
Inflorescence. Inflorescence leaf-opposed or supra-axillary, cymose (pseudo-racemose). Inflorescence common peduncle 5–10 mm long. Inflorescence rachis prickles present. Inflorescence 3–10-flowered. Flowers 5-merous. Pedicels at anthesis 5–10 mm long, prickles present. Calyx tube at anthesis 2.5–3.5 mm long. Calyx lobes at anthesis attenuate, 7–18 mm long. Calyx prickles at anthesis present. Calyx stellae very dense. Calyx stellae central ray not gland-tipped. Calyx simple hairs absent, Type 2 hairs absent. Corolla purple, 12–15 mm long, rotate. Anthers 4–5 mm long. Ovary with Type 2 hairs only. Functional style 6–8 mm long, strongly bent near base, not touching anthers.
Fruits. Fruiting calyx lobes more than half length of mature fruit or lobes exceeding mature fruit. Mature fruits globular, 9 mm diameter, yellow or yellowish-green. Seeds 1.2–1.5 mm long.
Distribution and habitat. New South Wales, Northern Territory, Western Australia. NSW: North Far Western Plains, South Far Western Plains.
