Vegetative form. Mid-culm nodes rarely sparsely hairy or glabrous, not pigmented. Basal leaf sheaths glabrous or scabrous or pubescent. Ligule membranous, abaxially glabrous or hairy (hairs sparse, minute). Leaf blades adaxially scabrous; abaxially scabrous.

Reproductive organization. Rudimentary spikelets absent.

Hermaphrodite (`perfect') spikelets. Hermaphrodite spikelets 20-35 mm long. Lower glume 20-34 mm long. Upper glume 20-34 mm long. Rachilla glabrous. Callus 1.2-2 mm long. Lemma 15-25 mm long. Lemma margins ciliolate (obscurely). Lemma intercostal regions glabrous or silky, the hairs only at the base (lower 2/3s). Median awn 30-60 mm long; 10-16 mm below tip; arising from the mid-point of the lemma (or slightly below), golden-brown. Palea slightly shorter than the lemmas (shorter than the lemma), 12.7-18 mm long. Lodicules skewed triangular.

Common name. Ludo Wild Oats.

Qld: Theodore-Taroom road, c. 11 km from Theodore, on roadside in gravelly clay loam, annual with erect flowering culms, 28 Sept. 1968, S.L.Everist 8095 (BRI, CANB!). N.S.W.: Moree, 58 km N on Newell Hwy, 14 Oct. 1988, N.LLoyd 704 (CANB). Notes. Economic importance: a weed of cereal crops.
