(Variant) Arrhenatherum elatius (L.) P.Beauv. ex J.Presl & C.Presl var. elatius

Vegetative form. Basal culm internodes not swollen. Culms 3-5 noded. Mid-culm nodes constricted. Mid-culm internodes glabrous or puberulous (sparsely). Leaf blades not grooved.

Inflorescence. Rachides 90-150 mm long.

Hermaphrodite (`perfect') spikelets. Glumes slightly shorter than the proximal lemma or equalling the proximal lemma. Incomplete lemma veins extending the length of the veins; intercostal regions scabrous, the hairs over most of the dorsal surface. Proximal male florets with 1 stamens. Lemma intercostal regions scaberulous or scaberulous and villous (hairs antrorse, straight, stiff, as on callus, to 1 mm long), the hairs over the entire dorsal surface. Palea equalling the lemmas, acute or obtuse, entire; intercostal regions glabrous.

Common name. False Oatgrass.

Distribution. New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, Queensland, and South Australia.

Vouchers. Specimens examined morphologically: N.S.W.: Glen Elgin, 28 Nov. 1931, T.B.P. 195 (CANB). A.C.T.: Turner/Acton area, Canberra, rural grassland community in semi-shade site, alt. 1900 ft [580 m], probably an escape from improved pastures, 6 Nov. 1959, R.Pullen 1951 (CANB); CSIRO grounds, Black Mtn, Canberra, rural grassland, alt. c. 2000 ft [610 m], locally common grass near experimental plots, erect to c. 4 ft tall, 8 Dec. 1961, R.Pullen 3000 (CANB).
