Vegetative form. Slightly glaucous perennial, caespitose. Culms 30-45 cm high, c. 5 noded. Mid-culm nodes glabrous, hidden by the leaf sheaths, not pigmented. Mid-culm internodes hollow, scabrous (below the nodes). Leaves non-auriculate. Basal leaf sheaths densely scabrous. Ligule c. 3 mm long, membranous, acute, abaxially hairy. Leaf blades basally flat and involute (above), linear, 30-120 mm long, 1.5-2.5 mm wide; adaxially scabrous, shallowly grooved; abaxially scabrous, apices acuminose.
Reproductive organization. Plants bisexual. Incomplete spikelets absent.
Inflorescence. Inflorescence a panicle, open, symmetrical, partially exserted. Rachides 80-200 mm long, scabrous. Primary inflorescence branches scabrous; clustered, spreading (bare at the base, then usually 3-nately divided), filiform, verticillate.
Hermaphrodite (`perfect') spikelets. Hermaphrodite spikelets pedicellate, c. 3 mm long, laterally compressed. Pedicels 3-6 mm long, slender, clavate, scabrous. Glumes two per spikelet, diverging from the spikelets, dissimilar, unequal in length. Lower glume longer than the upper glume, slightly keeled, acute, muticous, margin membranous; 1 veined, midvein scabrous; intercostal regions scaberulous. Upper glume slightly keeled, acute, muticous, margin membranous; 1 veined, midvein scabrous; intercostal regions scaberulous. Rudimentary florets absent. Incomplete florets absent. Hermaphrodite florets 1 per spikelet. Rachilla glabrous or pilose (hairs sparse), apically prolonged; prolongation c. 0.5 mm long. Callus present, blunt, glabrous. Lemma less firm than the glumes, c. 1.7 mm long, hyaline to membranous, not keeled, truncate, shortly dentate; muticous. Lemma 4-5 veined. Lemma veins obscure, glabrous; intercostal regions glabrous. Palea fully developed, slightly shorter than the lemmas, similar in texture to the lemmas, hyaline. Lodicules 2, free, hyaline, ovate. Stamens 3. Anthers c. 0.6 mm long. Ovary glabrous. Styles 2, free to their bases.
Fruit. Fruit conical to oblong, glabrous.
Distribution. Endemic. South Australia.
Ecology. Mesophytic.
Classification. Pooideae; Poodae; Aveneae.
References. Morphology: Vickery 106-107 (1941).
