Vegetative form. Perennial, erect or geniculate to ascending. Culms 20-40 cm high, branched above (and rooting at the nodes). Mid-culm nodes glabrous, hidden by the leaf sheaths (sheaths longer than the internodes). Mid-culm internodes glabrous, terete. Leaves non-auriculate. Basal leaf sheaths not keeled, terete, the same colour as the lamina (upper sheaths green or purplish), with the veins equally striate. Ligule to 6 mm long, membranous, acute (?). Leaf blades flat, linear, to 200 mm long, to 2.5 mm wide, green or purplish; adaxially scabrous, shallowly grooved; with margins scabrous; convolute in bud.
Reproductive organization. Plants bisexual. Incomplete spikelets absent. Inflorescence of chasmogamous spikelets.
Inflorescence. Inflorescence a panicle, green and purple, open, symmetrical (pyramidal), not deciduous as a unit. Peduncles scabrous. Rachides to 120 mm long, scabrous. Primary inflorescence branches scabrous; paired or clustered (?), spreading.
Hermaphrodite (`perfect') spikelets. Hermaphrodite spikelets pedicellate, (2.5-)2.75-4 mm long, laterally compressed, not disarticulating as a separate unit, disarticulating above the glumes. Pedicels slender, scabrous. Glumes two per spikelet, not diverging from the spikelets, similar, subequal, exceeding the florets, longer than the proximal lemma. Lower glume sometimes longer than the upper glume, membranous, keeled, muticous; 1 veined, midvein scabrous; intercostal regions scabrous. Upper glume membranous, keeled, muticous; 1 veined, midvein scabrous; intercostal regions scabrous. Rudimentary florets absent. Incomplete florets absent. Hermaphrodite florets 1 per spikelet. Rachilla disarticulating directly below the florets, hairy, the hairs almost equalling the lemma, apically prolonged; prolongation c. 0.5 mm long. Callus present, blunt, densely bearded. Lemma less firm than the glumes, laterally compressed, ovate, (1.5-)2-2.5 mm long, not keeled, truncate, dentate, 4 -lobed; awned. Lemma intercostal regions densely silky. Awns 1, median. Median awn about as long as the body of the lemmas, 1.5-3.25 mm long, 1 veined, dorsal; arising from the mid-point of the lemma, straight or geniculate. Palea fully developed, slightly shorter than the lemmas, membranous. Lodicules 2, hyaline, ovate. Stamens 3. Anthers 0.6-0.8 mm long. Ovary glabrous. Styles 2, free to their bases.

Distribution. Endemic. Tasmania.
Ecology. Hydrophytic. At the edge of tarns and lakes in highland areas.
Classification. Pooideae; Poodae; Aveneae.
