Leaves non-auriculate. Basal leaf sheaths scabrous (in the grooves), with the veins equally striate. Ligule 3-5 mm long, membranous, laciniate, abaxially hairy. Leaf blades linear, 80-250 mm long, 1-3.5 mm wide; adaxially scabrous, shallowly grooved; abaxially scabrous; with margins scabrous, apices acuminose; convolute in bud.

Primary inflorescence branches scabrous; clustered, spreading (bare at the base, then 2-3 times 3-nately divided, with few spikelets at the ends of the branches), filiform, verticillate.

Hermaphrodite (`perfect') spikelets. Hermaphrodite spikelets pedicellate, 3-3.5 mm long, laterally compressed, ovate to elliptic. Pedicels 2-8 mm long, slender, subclavate, scabrous. Glumes two per spikelet, similar, subequal, exceeding the florets, longer than the proximal lemma. Lower glume membranous, keeled, acuminate to acute, muticous; 1 veined, midvein scabrous. Upper glume membranous, apically keeled, acuminate to acute, muticous; 1 veined, midvein scabrous. Rudimentary florets absent. Incomplete florets absent. Hermaphrodite florets 1 per spikelet. Rachilla hairy, apically prolonged; prolongation 0.2-0.5 mm long. Callus present, blunt, with short hairs,. Lemma firmly membranous, not keeled, dentate, 4 -lobed; awned. Lemma 5 veined. Lemma veins obscure, glabrous; intercostal regions glabrous. Awns 1, median. Median awn 1 veined, subapical. Palea fully developed, slightly shorter than the lemmas, membranous, shortly bifid. Lodicules 2, free, hyaline, oblong. Stamens 3. Anthers 0.4-0.6 mm long. Ovary glabrous. Styles 2, free to their bases.
