The families of British spiders

L. Watson and M. J. Dallwitz

L.W. acknowledges indebtedness to E.B. Ford, whose delightful Butterflies converted a child’s interest in natural history into a holistic approach to biological science; his parents, who from their modest income purchased it, Curtis’s British Entomology, and Blackwall’s Spiders of Great Britain and Ireland for the same child. We are also indebted to Ian Dawson (Secretary of the British Arachnological Society), who provided references to relevant nomenclatural publications, then critically examined the attempted taxonomic interpretations of Blackwall’s illustrations, and pointed out errors.
