Sammlung europäischer Schmetterlinge, errichtet von Jacob Hübner in Augsburg (1793–1841): updated legends for the plates

DELTA Home

A copy of this monumental assemblage of plates was downloaded from the Biodiversity Library. High resolution scans all 751 comprising the nine volumes (depicting over nearly 3000 species) are being cleaned and compacted for convenience of screen display, and selections of the best will be incorporated in the interactive ‘British Insects’ packages. The illustrations vary from excellent (e.g., the noctuids on Plates 41, 88) to strangely inadequate (restricted to life-size pictures of tiny moths) or atrocious (e.g., those on noctuid Plates 57 and 84), with most falling somewhere in between. In general, Hübner’s representations of overall form and wing patterning are much better than the colouring, which is often too bright and sometimes garish. Identities assigned here by nomenclatural cross referencing are being checked so far as practicable against illustrations, descriptions and keys in the works listed in the References, including Internet sources, but only to a very limited extent against specimens. It is impracticable in the present context to keep abreast of nomenclatural recombinations, generation of which continues apace, but this effort at associating Hübner’s depictions with names in recent use might at least encourage their use in other applications.

In addition to thousands of lepidopteran species names, Hübner is the acknowleged author of over 1600 generic names. Many of the latter are still in use, but the plates comprising the Sammlung europäischer Schmetterlinge usually pre-date them, linking specific epithets only with the early, very broad genera which correspond more closely with modern families. The following list purports to assign Hübner’s figures to binomials and families in current use, with specific names given on the plates which are now reduced to synonymy appended in parentheses. At the outset, the Bradley et al. (1972) edition of the Kloet and Hincks Check List of British Insects, extensively cross referenced and extended to mainland-European species via the illustrations and descriptions in Kirby’s Butterflies and moths of Europe (1907), proved invaluable for our purpose, supplying dozens of old synonyms which are lacking from the interactive Fauna Europaea check list and from Bradley’s (2000) update of the earlier British one; and subsequently we have relied extensively on the excellent compilation of nomenclature and photos by Markku Savela at http://www.funet.fi/pub/sci/bio/life/warp/lepidoptera-index-a.html. Names that could not be resolved via these sources need pursuing with resort to relatively inaccessible literature. Of them, GBIF indicates “provisionally accepted” in the voluminous compilation offered by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (http://data.gbif.org/welcome.htm), which is ambiguous or uninformative regarding recombinations and synonyms. It also incorporates numerous errors – including in the present context referring all the butterfly species of the genus Erebia to “Diptera – Tachinidae”, as well as “provisionally accepting” such absurdities as “Satyrus peas Hübner” (see Vol. I, Plate 29 below), spelling variants of synonyms (e.g. Glaucopsyche alexis, Vol. I, Plate 56), etc., etc. In fact, dozens of specific epithets attributed in nomenclatural lists to Hübner evidently represent either deliberate or accidental changes (spelling mistakes, typographical errors or orthographic variants) in his applications of pre-existing names (occasionally including his own). For example, prior names ending in “...ata” he often presented as “...aria” or vice versa: clathraria Hübner = clathrata Linn., calabraria Hübner = calabra Petagna, mundata Hübner = mundataria Stoll, tibialata Hübner = tibiale Esper; etc. The geometrid plate 43 is especially instructive in this context, with Fig. 225 labelled obliguata (= obliquata, cf. his Fig. 423), actually = obliquaria Denis & Schffermüller (now a synonym of Chesias rufata); and curiously, a convincing representation of Chloroclysta siterata is labelled “psittacata”, a “provisionally accepted” Hübner name which suggests labelling involving dictation and a scribe more experienced in ornithology.

It would be pretentious to include nomenclatural authorities across the board here, but it has seemed appropriate at least to indicate the figures associated with specific names authored by Hübner, especially since most of them are considered to be illustrative of types. Publication dates are quoted from Hemming (1937), who assiduously pursued all of Hübner’s output through relatively inaccessible sources, including sales catalogues, and established that Plates 182-207 of Volume I (Papiliones), 36-38 of II (Sphinges), 70-83 of III (Bombyces), 158–185 of IV (Noctues) and 106–113 of V (Geometrae) 31-32 of VI (Pyrales), 48-53 of VII (Tortrices), and 70-71 of VIII (Tineae) were published by Geyer after Hübner’s death in 1826. Hermming’s alphabetical index of species (pp. 303-324) indicates the broadly circumscribed genera to which they were formerly assigned.
